HOULTON, Maine — Crews responded to a large structure fire located near the Houlton-Irish Settlement International Airport on Tuesday night.
According to the Houlton Fire Department, crews responded at about 7:50 p.m. to an old hangar that was converted into a business complex.
Houlton Fire Chief Milton Cone told NEWS CENTER Maine on Wednesday that the building housed two medical marijuana dispensaries, an auction house, and a tiny homes manufacturer.
Crews had to tap into the town's water supply, a reservoir, to help put out the fire Tuesday night, Cone said.
"We also taxed the town’s water supply. The reservoir over there actually, we had the whole water company that responded to shut down the electricity to the property but they were also monitoring the level of the reservoir to make sure that we didn’t completely drain the reservoir, so that was an area of concern as well," Cone explained.
The state fire marshal's office is now investigating the cause of the fire.
"We called the fire marshal in to assist us with origin and cause. We’re also talking with the different businesses and haven’t talked with them yet. We need to talk with them to see if they actually had insurance on their property to see whether they are going to be able to rebuild, and we hope that it works out well for everybody so that the businesses will be able to continue. Maybe some of them at that site with a little reconstruction or at another site," Cone said.
The fire department is still working on making contact with all the businesses affected by the fire.
No injuries were reported, according to Cone.
