Snowmobile clubhouse destroyed by fire in Hollis

Multiple towns responded to a fire on utility pole lines located off River Road, officials said.

HOLLIS, Maine — Multiple towns were called to a fire located off River Road Tuesday night.

According to Hollis Fire Department Chief Chris Young, firefighters responded to a "moderate-sized" fire on utility pole lines after it was reported just before 10 p.m.

The utility pole lines run beside Hollis Elementary School, but the fire was located hundreds of yards away, Young said. The school building was not threatened by the fire, but the Hollis Honkers Snowmobile Club's trail side clubhouse was destroyed, Young said.

The fire was completely contained by midnight, and crews remained on-scene finishing mop up until 1:15 a.m., according to Young. The total area burned is estimated to be just under an acre.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.

The Maine Forest Service and crews from Waterboro, Buxton, Limington, Limerick, and Goodwins-Mills also responded to the scene.
