BREWER (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A fire in Brewer closed down a major road and bridge Wednesday night as crews worked to fight a blaze on North Main Street.
Smoke billowing from 18 N Main St. could be seen from around town.
North Main Street and the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge, which is also Route 1A, were closed down while firefighters worked to contain and extinguish.
Public Safety Director Jason Moffitt says the situation would have been much worse if it was during the daytime because that is a very busy intersection.
The building, which is at least three floors, had business spaces downstairs and at least 2 apartments upstairs.
Moffitt said, "The first units on scene were police officers. They were able to determine an occupant of one of the apartments had gotten out safely. There were no other occupants home at the time. At this point they were able to knock the fire down quite quickly."
Mofitt said a State Fire Marshall was called to help them determine the cause of the fire.
Brewer Fire Department was assisted by crews from Bangor, Eddington and Holden.
