Man accused of stabbing neighbor makes new plea in Portland murder trial

Jonathan Alas pleaded not guilty for reason of insanity for the 2023 murder of Christopher Godin.

PORTLAND, Maine — Jonathan Alas is facing murder charges after being accused of stabbing his neighbor Christopher Godin to death in February 2023.

Last year, Alas pleaded not guilty against the charges. On Wednesday, he returned to court to plea not criminally responsible by reason of insanity.

"Based on our review of police reports and statements, our investigations and reports from State Forensic Services, Mr. Alas elected to make this additional plea not criminally responsible," said attorney Matthew Crockett who is representing Alas.

On Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, police found Godin in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds after they received a call about a shirtless man stabbing another man in a building lobby at 263 Cumberland Ave., according to court documents.

Police located Alas on the night of the murder in his apartment building, without a shirt, and a single puncture wound to his abdomen, along with a bloody kitchen knife nearby.

One of the neighbors police spoke with said they saw a younger man with dark hair stabbing Godin who they believed was on drugs because "... he was, like, pretty mellow about it," court documents read.

"... He turned around and looked at me, and he turned back and stabbed [Godin] again," the affidavit said. "Like he wasn't in any shock at all."

Those who knew Godin said his murder left a void in their lives.

"He was very sweet. Everybody loved him," Godin's friend Jon Robichaud said. "Anytime I’m dancing or watching music I think of him because we use to spend so much time in the Old Port and danced."

Alas is scheduled to go to trail in April 2025.
