TOPSHAM, Maine — A woman from Fryeburg has filed a lawsuit after a monster truck crash injured her and her child at the Topsham Fairgrounds earlier this summer. A monster truck drove up a dirt mogul and struck electrical wires, dragging multiple utility poles into the crowd on June 1.
The lawsuit states plaintiff Carly Kobs is seeking damages from the Renegade Monster Truck Tour owners Rettew Motorsports LLC, the "Crushstation" monster truck driver Gregory Winchenbach of Jefferson, and the Sagadahoc Agricultural & Horticultural Society.
The lawsuit said electrical wires and other debris fell onto the plaintiff and her minor son, causing "injuries, pain and suffering, and medical expenses."
Kobs suffered an abrasion to her knee and was treated at the scene, according to the Topsham Police Department's incident report. The report also said at least six people between the ages of six and 73 had been injured.
Two people were taken to the hospital, while several others were treated at the scene, according to police.
The lawsuit claims the monster truck tour failed to "adequately warn" eventgoers of the dangers associated with the event and also allowed its employee to drive negligently. The complaint alleges the Sagadahoc Agricultural & Horticultural Society, the owners of the fairgrounds, failed to oversee the safe use of their property and allowed the truck tour to use the grounds, including dirt moguls built on the track, in a "dangerous manner."
Topsham police did not press criminal charges after the incident.
