STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Kirt Damon is on the road to recovery, waiting for the stab wounds to his abdomen and neck to heel. The 24-year old says he is not worried about the physical wounds, but the emotional scarring.
Damon and his friend Zachary Joseph were visiting with Miranda Darner before dawn Sunday morning. What the two young men did not know was she had a protection order against her estranged husband, Christopher, who was in some nearby woods.
According to Damon, the estranged husband made multiple phone calls to the Corinth home, a violation of the protection order.
Damon said, "I got on the phone and go listen there's nothing going on here. It's fine. He's like I'm going to kill you...People make threats all the time, you just got to brush it off. You cant worry about that kind of stuff. In this situation I should of worried a little more I guess."
What the groups says they did not know until later was Christopher Darner was hiding in nearby woods listening to their conversation on a baby monitor.
"A little bit later he just comes right through the back door. He gets in my face. I couldn't believe he was there. I'm just like 'uh' and I see his right fist and I'm like well-- any second now. I'm going to catch a right to the side of the head," said Damon.
It was at this point Damon claims he was stabbed and yelled for help. His friend Zachary Joseph ran in, grabbed Darner, and place him in a choke hold.
"Zach was screaming I am getting tired, I can't hold him any longer.I go, Zach you got to keep holding on you got to keep holding on," said Damon.
The state medical examiner later determined Darner's cause of death was "asphyxia due to compression of the neck."
Damonsays both he and Joseph arestruggling with the emotions brought on by the events.
"It's very sad because it's like, it could've been me and I'm grateful it wasn't but then again he died and that wasn't the intention," explained Damon.
Damon and Joseph are attending counseling to deal with the situation. They continue to cooperate with investigators.
No one has been charged with Christopher Darner's death.
According to investigators, they are looking into the circumstances leading up to the death. This includes the history of domestic violence and they are looking at if it was self-defenseor defense of a third person as a possible motive.
