Copy of Shot in the head and starving, coyote gives birth to 4 pups

Being a pregnant coyote probably isn’t easy – especially when she is starving, blind and has a bullet in her head.

When members of the Animal Rescue Team, Inc. in the small town of Solvang, just north of Santa Barbara, found Angel in February she was in bad shape.

Rescuers found the coyote had fallen 30 feet down a ravine into a water shed. She was starved, dehydrated and had a bullet in her skull, right between the eyes.

It was so bad, at one point Angel had stopped breathing and rescuers had to perform CPR.

She was also pregnant.

Except, rescuers wouldn’t discover she was pregnant until six weeks later, when she delivered a litter of four pups.

Now, Angel and her four pups are alive and healthy.

“Although she remains blind, she is the best mother we have ever witnessed,” rescuers wrote on the organization’s Facebook page.

Eventually Angel’s pups will be released back into the wild, but not until they are ready, rescuers said.

As for Angel, rescuers hope to donate the “miracle mom” to a state permitted wildlife facility, where they hope she will be able to live out the remaining years of her life free of bullets, starvation and hunger.

“We believe she deserves to remain alive,” rescuers said.
