WARREN (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Nine years into a life sentence for murder, Ashton Moores is dead.
The Maine Dept. of Corrections said Moores died just before 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 at the Maine State Prison in Warren. Moores was 70 years old. The notification did not include his cause of death.
Moores began his prison sentence in 2009 after being convicted of the murder and sexual assault of Christina Simonin. She was found dead in a Bangor parking lot in March 2007. Her body had been tied up and placed in a bag.
Police said Simonin had been living with Moores. The evidence they collected was used by prosecutors at trial to support their conclusions that Moores first raped Simonin and beat her to death.
