WELLS (NEWS CENTER Maine) — The name will stay, but the image is out.
A consensus was reached Tuesday night at a public forum in Wells about the controversial and long-standing Native American mascot, according to our partners at Portland Press Herald.
Residents in Wells along with students and school officials met to discuss the use of the Native American profile that has represented the Warriors nickname for decades.
About 80 people showed up to the forum hosted by a mascot advisory committee. The Warrior nickname attracted statewide attention following an October football game in which the mother of an opposing team's quarterback said she witnessed Wells fans mocking Native American culture.
