MACHIAS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The town of Machias is still recovering after a fire consumed the iconic Helen's Restaurant early Friday morning.
Firefighters battled the blaze well into the afternoon, but by then the building was completely destroyed. Today, only charred remnants are left.
People across the state and the country are pitching in to help the restaurant recover. A crowd-funding website had already raised over $10,000 from more than 100 donors by the end of the day Friday.
"It's great to see everyone come together and help everyone out," Kathi Lavoie said. "Definitely something about Maine."
Meanwhile locals are staying positive and already looking forward to eating at Helen's again. The restaurant's owner said he hopes it will be up and running by next summer.
"I'm so glad to hear they're coming back and rebuilding here," Bill Handrahan said. "The people in the community really appreciate the food that Helen's have."
