PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- City officials voted unanimously Tuesday evening for a single site facility to be used as Portland's new homeless shelter.
The decision came after much debate and hours of public testimony over the past few weeks. Members of the Health and Human Services committee heard more than two hours of public comment Tuesday evening, some people saying one large facility was inhumane and would not meet the needs of the Portland's homeless population. Others saying it makes more sense to create a central location for help.
Despite the vote to move forward with the type of building, it is still not clear how many beds the facility will have or where it will be located.
Councilors plan to take the issue up again in early January.
