Fire at Chelsea business deemed accidental

The Office of the State Fire Marshal determined that it started in an area of the warehouse where lithium batteries were being stored.

CHELSEA, Maine — A fire at a business in Chelsea over the weekend has been deemed accidental.

It happened Sunday at New England Rent to Own on River Road.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal investigated the fire and determined that it started in an area of the warehouse where lithium batteries were being stored, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a release Tuesday.

The fire is considered accidental in nature, the release stated.

A building and 10 mobile sheds reportedly burned in the fire. There were no employees in the building at the time, and no one was injured, officials said. The owners said they do have insurance to cover the losses.

Despite the loss, the owners said they plan to keep their 22 employees working.

One building on the property was salvaged. There were plans to hook up a generator for power and allow those employees to continue to work this week, the owners said.
