SANFORD, Maine — Domestic abuse is a pervasive issue that affects communities across the United States, and Maine is no exception.

Sadly, even teenagers are not immune to this problem.

However, thanks to the efforts of York County's Domestic Violence Resource Center, known as "Caring Unlimited," thousands of teens and adults are receiving education on how to identify and prevent abuse.

Caring Unlimited received a significant boost to continue its mission and make a difference in the lives of young people.

"Youth now know the importance of recognizing, preventing, and intervening in domestic abuse situations," Susan Giambalvo, the executive director of Caring Unlimited, said.

Giambalvo highlighted how even the smallest acts can make a significant difference in addressing this serious issue.

Caring Unlimited has recently been awarded by The Federal Office of Violence Against Women, a prestigious three-year, $500,000 grant to educate young people about the signs of dating abuse and violence.

Out of the numerous organizations nationwide, Caring Unlimited is one of only 16 selected to receive this grant.

The primary aim is to teach young individuals aged 11 to 24 how to identify signs of abuse within their relationships.

"Approximately one in four girls will experience dating abuse or violence before reaching the age of 18," Amy Genest, the Education Prevention Coordinator at Caring Unlimited, said.

It is crucial to address this issue early on to protect the wellbeing of teenagers and prevent the escalation of violence.

The program focuses on conducting educational sessions in schools throughout York County.

“We find in talking in schools with the youth that it is a real problem here in York County," Genest said.

By interacting directly with students, the organization aims to raise awareness about dating abuse and violence among the youth.

They determined to extend its reach beyond school environments and into rural areas across Maine.

By providing school-based education, the organization strives to equip young people with the knowledge to identify abusive behaviors, understand the impact, and take action.

Through this grant, Caring Unlimited plans to amplify its efforts and educate more youth and adults in York County.

The grant will enable Caring Unlimited to expand its programming, reach more youth, and educate more adults throughout York County.

Apart from its school-based education program, Caring Unlimited offers a range of additional resources to support those affected by domestic abuse.

These resources include a 24-Hour Helpline, emergency shelter services, and individual and group support programs. Caring Unlimited is dedicated to providing comprehensive assistance to survivors and helping them rebuild their lives.
