Coast Guard leading boat-wreck cleanup efforts on Cape Elizabeth beach

A boat dislodged from its mooring on Peaks Island during the April 4 nor'easter and crashed on Cliff House Beach on Friday.

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — The United States Coast Guard has advised people to keep their distance from a boat wreck in Cape Elizabeth while officials work to clear debris.

The boat, named Destiny, dislodged from its mooring on Peaks Island during the April 4 nor'easter and crashed on Cliff House Beach on Friday, according to the town of Cape Elizabeth. Nobody was onboard, according to the Coast Guard.

Officials said, due to the nature of the wreckage, it's important that people stay away from it for safety reasons.

"At this point in time, no active discharge of oil or oil sheen has been observed or reported from this vessel," the Coast Guard said in a release Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said it continues to monitor the wreckage, including the two inboard engines, and has engaged with the boat owner, insurance company, and local salvage company to develop a plan to mitigate any pollution threats. The boat owner is ultimately responsible for cleanup of the debris and wreckage, according to the Coast Guard.
