Camden police arrest singer-songwriter Don McLean for assault

CAMDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Camden Police report singer-songwriter Don McLean was arrested and charged for assault early Monday morning. 

According to police, McLean was charged with the lowest level assault crime. 

Police say McLean was arrested without incident and transported to Knox County Jail around 3:13 a.m. McLean posted bail a couple of hours later and was released from custody. Penbay Pilot reports McLean is scheduled to appear in Knox County District Court in Rockland on Feb. 22.

McLean's eight-minute-long "American Pie" was released in 1971. It was a No. 1 U.S. hit for four weeks in 1972.
