Burglary leads to high-speed chase and arrest for North Berwick man

The homeowner suspected that his former roommate had been squatting in the house.

WATERBORO (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A North Berwick man has been arrested after breaking into a Waterboro home then leading police on a high-speed chase, according to officials.

York County Sherriff William King says 29-year-old Kyle Berounsky of North Berwick was suspected of burglarizing a home on Kennedy Drive.

Police determined a pry bar was used to force open the back door. The homeowner suspected that Berounsky, a former roommate, had been squatting in the house.

While this investigation was unfolding, a driver was pulled over on Main Street for having a plate light out and following too close to another vehicle. The driver happened to be Berounsky, who used a fake name, according to police.

Berounsky then fled the traffic stop, reaching speeds of 100 mph.

He led officers on a high-speed chase for over 12 miles.

Berounsky hit a spike strip near Merrill's Country Store and continued to drive with a flattened tire to Leisure Lane where he bailed out of his vehicle and ran into his friend's house.

Officials say the Wells police K9 chased after Berounsky and caught him on the second floor of the home.

Deputies also found a pry bar in his car.

Berounsky was arrested and charged with eluding a police officer and burglary. Bail has been set at $5,000.

Berounsky will appear in the Springvale District Court via video arraignment on Monday, February 26.
