BUCKFIELD, Maine — A forest fire burned more than five acres of land in Buckfield over the weekend.
Buckfield emergency officials responded to the north shoreline of South Pond around 6:10 p.m. Saturday and had to take a trail to get to the fire, the Buckfield Fire Department told NEWS CENTER Maine. By the time officials reached the flames, roughly an acre of forest land had already burned.
Windy, nighttime conditions and steep and rocky terrain made fighting the fire a challenge, officials said. Fire departments from Turner, Paris, Norway, Hebron, Minot, Sumner, and Canton provided mutual aid at the scene.
Officials stayed at the scene until 11:45 p.m. Saturday, and then a smaller number of crews returned Sunday morning to extinguish remaining hot spots around the edges of the fire. Officials cleared the scene around 2 p.m. Sunday.
Officials said the fire appears to have started in a squatter's living area on the shoreline of South Pond. In all, the fire burned about 5.6 acres of land.
Nobody was injured, according to the fire department.
