Boy, 11, killed in ATV crash in Sangerville

Wardens said the boy had reportedly gone for an ATV ride on a neighboring friend's property after helping them with some chores.

SANGERVILLE, Maine — State game wardens are investigating after an 11-year-old boy was killed in an ATV crash Tuesday in Sangerville.

At about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, the Maine Warden Service responded to a report of an ATV crash on East Sangerville Road, where an 11-year-old boy was unresponsive, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said in a news release.

Wardens said the boy had reportedly gone for an ATV ride on a neighboring friend's property after helping them with some chores. The boy had also used that same ATV before, and it was owned by the family friend, wardens said.

The neighbor then went searching for the boy after he failed to return and found him unresponsive with the ATV on top of him on the trail, the release stated.

According to the release, the neighbor quickly called 911 and found help to remove the ATV from the boy.

People at the scene reportedly performed CPR until a Piscataquis County deputy responded and took over CPR efforts.

"Emergency medical personnel arrived soon after and were unable to revive the boy who passed away at the scene," the release said.

Officials said the crash remains under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.

The Maine Warden Service, Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office, Sangerville Fire Department, and Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department assisted at the scene.

No further information was available.
