Topsham police said the body of a 20-year-old college student was found Sunday morning.

TOPSHAM, Maine — Police are investigating after a Bowdoin College student was found dead in a parking lot near the Frank J. Wood Bridge in Topsham on Sunday.

Topsham police responded just after 7 a.m. to a report of a deceased person found in a parking lot located at 2 Main St., where equipment used for the construction and replacement of the Frank J. Wood Bridge is parked, according to a news release from the department.

The body of a 20-year-old woman from California was reportedly found. Police said she was a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

Police said her body was brought to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy has been conducted and results are pending.

There is reportedly no threat to the community.

According to Bowdoin's academic calendar, students returned from Spring break on March 25.

The President of Bowdoin College Safa Zaki said in a letter to the community on Sunday that student Qingyang Zhan, known as K, died overnight off campus.

Zaki said Zhan had been living in the U.S. since 2019, arriving at Bowdoin College in the fall of 2021 after other academic endeavors in California.

"Faculty members describe K as a bright and engaging presence, and many will remember her warmth and kindness," Zaki said in the letter.

Bowdoin College is holding space in the Main Lounge of Moulton Union on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. where counseling and student affairs staff will be present. Students are encouraged to reach out for support through extended counseling hours this week and through telehealth support.
