Body of missing kayaker recovered from Frenchman Bay

Marine officials said the body of a 73-year-old man from Colorado was recovered late Saturday night.

BAR HARBOR, Maine — The body of a missing kayaker from Colorado Springs was recovered Saturday night in Frenchman Bay. 

The Department of Marine Resources said in a news release 73-year-old Dennis Webber of Colorado Springs, Colorado had launched his kayak at the end of Seely Road in Bar Harbor around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday for a solo trip. 

A family member alerted the Bar Harbor Police Department around at approximately 8:30 p.m. when Webber did not return, resulting in a search involving the Maine Marine Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, and National Park Service, the release stated. 

Webber was reportedly found by National Park Service personnel near The Thrumcap, described as a small island near where he entered the water on Seely Road. His body was recovered at 10 p.m. and he was wearing a lifejacket, according to the release. 

He was brought to the Bar Harbor town pier where he was pronounced dead by EMS personnel, then to the Jordan Fernald Funeral Home, the release stated. Webber's body will be examined by the medical examiner's office. 

His kayak has not been found.
