Annual Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta ends with pumpkin boat races.

DAMARISCOTTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- What better way to make use of a giant pumpkin than to turn it into a racing boat.

The town of Damariscotta was packed with crowds of people on Monday for the last day of the town's annual Pumpkinfest and Regatta. Eight pumpkins, all weighing well over 500lbs were gutted and decorated for the race around the harbor. There are separate divisions for powered pumpkin boats and paddle versions. Around 4,500 people packed the shoreline to watch this year according to the Director of the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta, Bill Clark.

"In all the years I've done this I don't think I've seen as many people as I did this year," said Clark. "That's what it's all about, putting people into town."

Other events during the festival included a giant pumpkin contest, parades, pumpkin catapults and a pumpkin derby.
