ROME, Maine — An 18-year-old motorcyclist from Benton died Friday after a crash with another vehicle in the town of Rome.

It happened around 1 p.m. in the area of 1002 Watson Pond Road, the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office said Monday in a press release.

The sheriff's office said Sophia Hayes was driving a motorcycle when she collided with another vehicle, causing her severe injuries. Deputy Jeff Boudreau applied two tourniquets while waiting for fire and EMS personnel to arrive, according to the release.

The nearby Travis Mills Foundation offered a landing zone for a Life Flight of Maine helicopter, but the helicopter was diverted and Hayes was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center, according to Read.

Despite life-saving measures, Hayes died from her injuries, according to the release.

The sheriff's office said the crash remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by Maine State Police. No charges are pending at this time, the release stated.
