Belfast inn catches fire, displacing 20 families

When first responders arrived at the inn shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, the second story was heavily involved and flames were rising through the roof.

BELFAST, Maine — The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a fire at the Admirals Ocean Inn in Belfast late Monday night.

The fire damaged four rooms and displaced 20 families, according to a social media post by Belfast Fire and EMS.

When first responders arrived at the inn shortly after 11 p.m., the second story was heavily involved and flames were rising through the roof, leading Belfast to request mutual aid from Belmont, Morrill, Searsport, and Monroe, officials said.

A quick and aggressive interior attack by initial crews helped contain the fire and damage to four rooms, the post stated.

Belfast Fire and EMS said the inn's maintenance director found alternative housing for displaced guests Monday night into Tuesday. American Red Cross spokesperson Jennifer Costa said the Red Cross sent a team to the scene.

"The Red Cross is providing financial assistance to a limited number of residents whose units were severely damaged or destroyed," Costa told NEWS CENTER Maine in an email. "We are also providing disaster-related health services and emotional support to all who were affected. The landlord is assisting displaced tenants identify alternate housing options."
