Bazooka shell used for training found next to condo parking lot

A bazooka shell similar to the one recovered in Topsham

TOPSHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A bomb squad was called to assist a scene on Munroe Lane in Topsham after a passerby found what appeared to be a bazooka shell, according to officials.

The shell was found Wednesday night next to a condo parking lot. The State Police bomb squad retrieved the nearly two-foot long shell and later transported it to a parking lot a half-mile away for examination.

Residents of more than a dozen condominiums off Monroe Lane were asked to stay inside their homes for several hours.

Officials say the device resembled a real bazooka shell and was used by the military for training. It was determined the device never had explosives inside.

The bomb squad used a robot to remove the device, where it was transported in a special trailer.

Fire Marshals suspect the device may have been left there by someone who did not know what to do with it.

Investigators say when it doubt, call police, so it can be examined and quietly properly disposed of.
