Miss Maine, Audrey Thames, will soon be competing for the title of Miss America.
She was crowned for the state in June and will compete for the national title on September 16th.
On Sunday she performed for friends and family at an event wishing her good luck. The party was held at her hometown in Topsham. She's hoping her small-town charm might give her a leg-up on the competition.
"We'll see how my talent goes," she explains with a laugh, "And then we'll know!" Out of 53 contestants, she will be the only one performing a speaking talent: a comedic monologue. It's a 90 second tongue twister about a woman who has a dream she's hosting a cocktail party and all of the people she's introducing have similar first names.
This weekend she performed for an audience of family and friends. But in less than a month, she'll be performing it for viewers. Wes Thames, Audrey's father, says "I think we're both very nervous for her, although she does very well with a crowd and does very well performing on stage.
The talent portion of the pageant accounts for 30% of the overall score - the most out of all the categories.
