Joshua's Restaurant and Tavern in Brunswick to close

"We hope to find someone that will continue to run the business as Joshua’s. The building owner is supporting our decision," the owners said back in June.

BRUNSWICK, Maine — A staple of Brunswick's Maine Street is set to close at the end of September.

Joshua's Restaurant and Tavern announced Monday in a social media post that its final day of business will be Sept. 28.

"We knew this day would come, but until you say it out loud, it just doesn’t quite seem like reality," the post stated. "As our staff knows, we have made the bittersweet decision to not renew our lease this fall."

In a social media post on June 13, the owners said their daughter Danika just graduated from high school, leaving them empty-nesters, and they want more freedom to do other things.

"We would like to be able to spend more time at our camp, fishing and skiing, spend a little time traveling, and have the freedom to visit Danika, whenever possible," the post stated.

"We hope to find someone that will continue to run the business as Joshua’s. The building owner is supporting our decision," the post continued. "We don’t know how long it will take, but you shouldn’t notice anything different at Joshua’s."

In Monday's post, the owners said they were "eternally grateful for the meals, tears, cheers, and milestones we’ve gotten to share with you and our amazing coworkers over the years."

The tavern is named after Civil War hero and former Maine Gov. Joshua Chamberlain, who graduated from Brunswick's Bowdoin College.
