BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A group of Navy retirees is organizing a Brunswick Naval Air Station reunion to take place in July. Tens of thousands of men and women served at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station, as did several thousand civilian workers on the base. So a group of Navy retirees wants them to come back.
The base officially closed five years ago, although the last planes left more than a year before that. The closing ended a more than sixty-year history, stretching back to the Second World War. The group of former Navy sailors has organized a number of social events for the reunion and says they’re hoping both Navy veterans and civilians will want to come and remember their time at the base.
“A lot of people have fond memories of the base, and if they’ve left the area when they come back they’ll meet the people who stayed here and people from all over who served here,” said retiree Paul Loveless. Loveless served three tours of duty at BNAS during his Naval career, met and married a local woman and eventually retired in the area.
The Brunswick Naval Air Station reunion is scheduled for July 15-17. The organizers have set up a website and hope people will go to the site and sign up before the end of May.
