Woman injured in Brunswick crash involving sheriff's office cruiser

Police alerted the public on social media around 4 p.m. of a crash on Harpswell Road near Bickford Avenue.

BRUNSWICK, Maine — A woman from Topsham was brought to a hospital with "serious" injuries following a crash in Brunswick involving a sheriff's office cruiser.

The Brunswick Police Department responded to a crash on Harpswell Road near Bickford Avenue around 2:30 p.m. involving a Cumberland County Sheriff's Office 2022 Ford pickup truck cruiser and a 2011 Subaru Forester, according to a news release from the department.

An initial investigation revealed the Subaru driven by 71-year-old Penelope Ebberts of Topsham made a left-hand turn in front of the sheriff's office cruiser that had its emergency equipment activated and was driven by Deputy Todd McGee.

Both vehicles were headed southbound on Harpswell Road and McGee was passing several vehicles in a line of traffic when the crash occurred, police said.

The Subaru flipped onto its driver's side and McGee stopped the cruiser at a nearby construction area, according to police. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

Ebberts was brought to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries. McGee was also brought to Maine Medical Center, with minor injuries, police said.

Harpswell Road near Bickford Avenue was closed due to the crash and drivers were asked to seek an alternate route, according to a social media post from the police department.
