BATH, Maine — Schools in RSU 1 are closed Monday as police investigate a safety concern.

RSU 1 serves Bath, West Bath, Woolwich, Phippsburg, and Arrowsic.

"Very early this morning Bath Police Department was made aware of a third-hand report of some statements made by an unknown person that were related to school safety that might involve our local area schools," Bath Police Chief Andrew Booth wrote in a social media post. "We are skeptical about the validity of these statements, but, out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with the RSU 1 superintendent, we decided to close Bath area schools today while we investigate."

Booth said police would update the public as information is available.
