BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Not every technology student can compare going to class to waking up on Christmas morning- but that's exactly what the Outdoor Power and Recreation program at Bangor's United Technologies Center said after receiving a donation of 10 brand new Ski-Doo snowmobiles this week.
The snowmobiles were donated by Bombardier Recreational Products to be used in repair lessons in the classroom at UTC. All together the 10 sleds add up to a $125,000 value. According to the program's instructor, most modern out door vehicles are computerized and it's important for students to be savvy electricians just as much as it is for them to be skilled technicians.
"He says I have ten units for you and he starts rattling off the model numbers and names and I just couldn't believe it, I almost fell over backwards. They're very high tech and it's just so great to be able to have the students be exposed to this," said instructor George Bergeron of the moment he was told about the donation.
The students in the program also get hands on experience by repairing snowmobiles and equipment used by the Maine Warden Service. The program instructor says this latest donation helps them to stay up on how to maintain the latest outdoor machinery and apply those skills to the real world.
