LEVANT, Maine — The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office is seeking information about a suspect vehicle involved in a "dangerous traffic incident" Friday morning in Levant that damaged a deputy's cruiser.

A Penobscot County deputy was traveling on Route 222 in Levant at about 7:15 a.m. when a red Kia Soul with a temporary Maine license plate was seen "driving at a criminal speed," the sheriff's office said on social media.

"As the deputy was turning around, the vehicle made a left turn nearly striking an ongoing car, because the vehicle posed an immediate risk to motorist, the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle," the social media post stated.

Deputies said the vehicle continued driving before it turned into a private driveway on Kenduskeag Levant Road. When the deputy entered the driveway, the Kia then drove around the home.

"When the deputy attempted to return [to] the roadway, his cruiser slid across the grass lawn and into a ditch," the sheriff's office reported.

The Kia fled the residence but was spotted by another deputy who was responding to the area. According to the sheriff's office, the suspect vehicle continued driving at an "erratic" speed but was not further pursued.

No injuries were reported, but the front end of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office cruiser was damaged.

Deputies ask anyone who may have information about the red Kia Soul to contact the sheriff's office at 207-947-4585. You can also provide information through the sheriff's office's tip line on its mobile app.
