Man identified in Penobscot County Jail death

The Old Town man was alone in his cell at the time of his death, and the death does not appear to be suspicious, according to officials.

Officials have identified the man who died at the Penobscot Jail on Sunday as James Pearsall, 50, of Old Town.

Pearsall was found unresponsive in a "life threatening situation" by a correctional officer during a routine population check around 5:20 a.m. on Sunday, according to a news release issued by the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency personnel and correctional officers attempted to save Pearsall's life but were unsuccessful, the release said.

The release stated that at the time of his death, Pearsall was alone in his cell, and his death does not appear suspicious.

According to the release, Pearsall had been in custody since Aug. 19. He was charged with aggravated trafficking in Class A schedule drugs, and had a $40,000 bail that was recently reduced to $10,000.
