Man arrested in Massachusetts after a Bangor woman was found dead in her home

BANGOR, Maine — In a press release Friday morning, the Bangor Police Department announced an arrest had been made in the death of Virginia Cookson who was found dead in her home on Larkin Street in Bangor. 

42-year-old Richard Keith Thorpe of Bangor was arrested early Friday morning in Pittsfield, Massachusetts by the Pittsfield Police, according to Det. Sgt. Tim Shaw of the Bangor Police Department.  

The death of 39-year-old Virginia Cookson was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police said on Thursday. 

On Wednesday around 9 a.m., Bangor police were made aware of a possible death on Larkin Street, according to a news release from the police department. 

A coworker of Cookson reportedly went to her home after she had not arrived at work Wednesday morning.

Detectives and evidence technicians are still processing the scene and interviewing witnesses,.

Cookson's death comes a week after officers responded to an incident reported as a "family fight" at the same home, the Bangor Police Department confirmed.

Cookson’s death remains under investigation.
