BANGOR, Maine — One man is hospitalized after driving erratically and crashing a vehicle on Cedar Street while evading police in Bangor late Monday night.

At about 11:30 p.m., Bangor police received a report about a man acting suspiciously on Second Street, the Bangor Police Department said in a news release.

As an officer was responding to the scene, the caller noted the man was now operating a vehicle erratically in the middle of the street, according to the release.

Upon arriving at the scene, an officer found the vehicle being operated "very erratically" on Second Street, and then attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

"The vehicle, a dark-colored BMW, almost came to a stop in response to the officer’s request, then sped off at a high rate of speed," the release stated. "The BMW turned onto Cedar Street and headed outbound."

Police said as the vehicle crossed the intersection of Cedar and Hammond Streets, the man lost control, causing the BMW to roll over and strike a utility pole.

The man, who was the only occupant of the BMW, was taken to an area hospital by personnel with the Bangor Fire Department, the release said.

Evidence technicians and detectives with the Bangor Police Department remained on the scene to investigate the incident.

Police said no further information is available at this time.
