BREWER, Maine — A man who was believed to be armed was shot and killed by the Brewer police chief Friday, according to police.
Shortly before 10:30 a.m., police received a report of a robbery at the city's Walmart, the Brewer Police Department said in a news release.
"It was reported that the loss prevention staff attempted to detain the subject, but the male brandished a firearm and fled into nearby woods," the release stated.
Brewer police Chief Jason Moffit responded to the area, where he was able to locate the man, according to the release.
"Chief Moffit issued commands to the subject, and he failed to follow the commands," police said. "The subject appeared to be reaching for a weapon and was shot and killed. The male subject involved in the incident has not been identified."
Police said the city manager placed Moffit on administrative leave, "as is standard protocol in police-involved shootings."
The use of deadly force will be investigated by the state attorney general's office.
Multiple police agencies, including state police, responded to the area.
Road closures were enacted at the intersection of Green Point Road and Wiswell Road into the afternoon.
