BANGOR, Maine — For kids and parents who rely on school lunches, summers can be a difficult time of year.
That's why organizations like the Bangor Boys and Girls Club are partnering with the Good Shepherd Food Bank to make it easier through the Free Summer Meal Program.
"Just being able to know that kids are getting a meal at least once a day," Bangor Boys and Girls Club Office Manager Bobby Smith said.
Smith and others have been giving out packed lunches since July 1 to anyone 18 years old and younger every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the Bangor Housing Splashpad.
From pizza and applesauce to carrots and ranch dressing, the club tries to give kids a variety of options while also focusing on nutrition.
The club has been involved in the meal program for all seven years Smith has been working.
"I just love seeing the kids enjoy their meals. Just watching the kids go up and get the fruits and vegetables and all the stuff they like to eat is just a good feeling," Smith said.
Workers with the nonprofit Gateway to Opportunity program are also helping give out free meals.
"Trying to help out all these kids that live here and make sure they get through the day with a good lunch," Gateway to Opportunity worker Kymani Riley said.
The meals are available to any child who needs one, but many of the kids who participate in the program live in the area.
For kids like Jordan Smith, it also gives them a way to meet new friends during the summer while school isn't in session.
"I walk down here have fun with my friends, hang outside and talk," Smith said.
While Smith might go for his friends, he stays for the food.
"It is so, so good! I'd give it a nine out of 10," Smith said.
The Bangor Boys and Girls Club will be providing meals at the splashpad until Aug. 16.
