Bangor police investigate death at Penobscot County Jail

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office said a recently admitted individual was found unresponsive Wednesday morning in his housing unit.

BANGOR, Maine — The death of an incarcerated man who was recently admitted to the Penobscot County Jail is under investigation.

According to a news release from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, the male inmate was found unresponsive in his housing unit just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Life-saving efforts were made by correctional and medical staff at the jail until the Bangor Fire Department arrived, the release stated. 

The man reportedly did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead. A preliminary investigation indicated the man's death was due to a medical or health-related event, the release stated. 

The sheriff's office said there are "no indications of a criminal or violent act."

The Maine Department of Corrections and Bangor Police Department were notified of the man's death, and the Bangor Police Department is overseeing his death investigation. 

"None of the other inmates in the immediate area were injured during the incident and mental health services were immediately made available," the sheriff's office said. 

The man's identity is being withheld at this time pending family notification.
