BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Police Department and the Department of Health and Human Services are investigating the death of a child in Bangor.
A local hospital called officials after a child arrived with life-threatening injuries on Sunday morning, according to a news release from the Bangor Police Department.
"Despite measures taken by the hospital, the child succumbed to the injuries during the night of Feb. 18th," the release stated.
Detectives and evidence technicians are continuing to investigate.
Police said this was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the safety of the public.
A spokesperson for the Maine DHHS released the following statement on Tuesday regarding the child's death and investigation:
"Every death of a child is a tragic loss. The Department of Health and Human Services coordinates with law enforcement as needed when such deaths occur and takes seriously its role in preserving the integrity of those investigations.
The Department is prohibited by state and federal confidentiality laws from commenting on child protective matters in most instances, subject to very limited statutory exceptions. We are unable to provide further comment at this time."
