Bangor man facing domestic violence assault, arson charges

The charges stem from an incident Saturday night on Sunset Avenue.

BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man has been charged with domestic violence assault and arson in connection with an incident on Sunset Avenue over the weekend.

Paul O'Neal, 38, was arrested shortly before noon on Sunday and taken to the Penobscot County Jail, Bangor police said Tuesday in a press release.

Police responded to a report of a fight and a camping tent on fire at the dead end of Sunset Avenue shortly before midnight on Saturday, the release stated. The incident happened in an area where unhoused people were tenting illegally, according to police.

The victim told police O'Neal had become assaultive. The victim also said O'Neal set fire to the victim's tent and tossed propane cannisters into the fire, according to the release. The explosion from the cannisters was heard more than a mile away, police said.

The victim self-reported minor injuries and declined medical treatment, according to officials.
