BANGOR, Maine — Bangor police are searching for a suspect in an attempted car theft Saturday, which escalated to an inaccurate social media post about a kidnapping.

Officers were called to an address on Blue Hill East just before 8 p.m. on Saturday, when the vehicle owner reported the car, with their child still asleep in the back, was stolen from their driveway, according to a Monday release from the Bangor Police Department.

"The car owner told police they were carrying groceries into their home, and when they
came back outside, the car was gone," the release states.

While officers took a full report at the scene, police began searching the area. They found the stolen vehicle still running and abandoned, with the driver's door still open, in the middle of a nearby intersection. Officials said the child was found still asleep in their car seat in the back, unharmed.

Police are still trying to identify the suspect and ask anyone with information to contact the Bangor Police Department at 207-947-7384, extension 5745.
