'Looked like a hurricane': Bangor business owners react to string of burglaries

Surveillance footage appeared to show a man breaking into three businesses on Hammond Street, police say.

BANGOR, Maine — For Rachel Moyse and other business owners, a burglary is one of the worst things that can happen.

Security footage from around 2 a.m. Wednesday appears to show a man breaking into Moyse's restaurant, Utopia, which is located on Hammond Street in downtown Bangor.

"It looked like a hurricane went through here," Moyse said. "He wasn't gentle by any means. I had to close for the night, which is a loss for my staff and myself, a loss of product, and also peace of mind."

Bangor police have identified the suspect as 39-year-old Richard Burrill.

The suspect first attempted to gain access to a neighboring restaurant, The Butcher The Baker, but moved on to Utopia, she said.

As it appears on further footage captured on Moyse's security cameras, the burglar allegedly used a shovel to pry open the window before making his way into the restaurant undetected.

Moyse said tablets, laptops, and high-end whiskeys were among the most expensive items stolen, but other things like food, clothing, and custom knives were also unaccounted for, which she said added up to nearly $8,000.

"There's no reason why you need to go rob people that work full time ... and hard for what they have," Moyse said.

Utopia and The Butcher The Baker weren't the only businesses impacted.

"I was just getting back from fishing with my son on Tuesday morning, and my wife comes hailing me and says we've been robbed," Bangor Wine and Cheese owner Eric Mihan said.

On July 29, just two days before Utopia was robbed, Burrill reportedly gained entry to Bangor Wine and Cheese.

Mihan said items missing from his shop were things like a souvenir T-shirt and the store's nearly 100-pound safe, which turned out to be empty.

"It was very strange just in terms of what this gentleman chose to take and what he chose to leave behind," Mihan said.

As they recover from the incident, the burglarized businesses lean on one another.

"We band together, and we fight back," Mihan said.

With the help of Moyse's security footage, Burrill has been charged with burglaries to all three businesses, theft, trespassing, and violation of conditions of release, according to a Thursday news release from the Bangor Police Department.

While the arrest gives her peace of mind, Moyse said she's still feeling the loss.

"I'm never going to get my money back nor are they [Bangor Wine and Cheese], and it's just ridiculous," Moyse said.
