ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine's emergency communications system reported an alert Thursday afternoon about a chemical spill on campus.
The alert notes that a chemical spill was reported at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center on Flagstaff Road.
The spill has reportedly been contained, and the incident is being managed by local authorities, the alert stated.
UMaine requested that people avoid the area for the time being, "due to activity around the building."
Emergency crews from the University of Maine and the Orono Fire Department were at the scene as of 3 p.m. but appeared to be clearing out of the area shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Crews at the scene told NEWS CENTER Maine that the UMaine public safety department was the lead agency.
A news release issued by the university noted that the spill was minor and isolated to an experiment that was being conducted by a visiting doctoral student inside a chemical hood.
"The student was sprayed by the chemical while in full protective gear," the release stated. "The student was able to decontaminate immediately in the lab following university protocol and was given a secondary decontamination by the Orono Fire Department Hazmat Team."
No injuries were reported, and the student declined medical transport. The student was evaluated on campus at the Northern Light Cutler Health Center.
The lab has been evaluated and ruled safe for reentry.
