BANGOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) – Crowds poured into the beloved Friars’ Bakehouse in downtown Bangor Friday for its final day of business.
The iconic establishment has been a favorite in town for nearly two decades. Many regulars and local business owners said the business will be greatly missed.
“This place has meant a lot to me and the community,” Ellie Small said. “It's the only place that honors the lord."
Franciscan Brothers Donald Paul and Kenneth Leo who run the cash-only shop say they are not done yet. They are opening a new taproom 30 minutes away in Bucksport.
I spent some time this weekend at the tap room tidying up after the plumber, electricians and carpenter. Do you...
The Friars said the move is to be closer to the Franciscan Brothers of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary monastery where they live. The new location will feature both Brother Don’s classic baked goods and their own beer.
"If you weren't hungry when you came through the door you are by now,” Brother Kenneth Leo joked as he served up lunch to a table of customers.
"I don't think anyone is going to be able to fill the particular niche that we had here for as long as we did,” Zachary Platt said.
Platt and other regulars said they are drawn to place by the good food and friendly atmosphere. The “No credit cards. No Cell phones. No attitude.” rule is refreshing in the middle of a busy day.
"I think it was just part of the charm. I'm sad to lose them but I understand why they want to be closer to home,” Jenifer Lloyd said.
The Friars’ new location is set to open in mid-March.
