Investigation into envelope with white powder found in Maine government building ends

Investigators said they believe this was not an intentional act, and no charges will be filed.

AUGUSTA, Maine — An investigation into the white powdery substance that was found Tuesday afternoon in an envelope at a government building in Augusta has concluded.

Capitol police were called to the fourth floor of the Cross Building at about 4:20 p.m. after the substance was found in a piece of mail, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Tuesday in a news release.

Moss said capitol police cleared the floor and isolated potential impact to the rest of the building and the state house nearby.

The substance was tested onsite, and all tests were reported "negative." It was unclear in the release, though, what chemicals officials were ruling out through the testing.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

It was later revealed by the Maine Department of Public Safety that the envelope was opened at the Bureau of Corporations, Elections, and Commissions and would be investigated by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, both of which are divisions of the Maine secretary of state's office.

A spokesperson with the secretary of state's office said Friday that the investigation had concluded. The agency determined it did not appear be an intentional act, and no charges would be filed.

Investigators with the secretary of state's office were assisted by Capitol Police, Augusta police and fire, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and the National Guard Civil Support team, the spokesperson said.
