Clinton man charged with murder in Waterville shooting investigation

The shooting led two area school districts—Waterville Public Schools and MSAD 49—to go into lockout Tuesday morning.

WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are investigating a fatal shooting on Highwood Street in Waterville that resulted in one death.

The shooting led two area school districts—Waterville Public Schools and MSAD 49—to go into lockout Tuesday morning. The school districts have since gone back to normal operations, according to the districts' superintendents.

A lockout typically means nobody can leave or enter schools, but classes continue as normal.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Tuesday morning the shooting happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Highwood Street.

In an update Tuesday evening, Moss said Waterville police responded to the parking lot of Mount Joseph, a rehabilitation and nursing facility, for a report of multiple gunshots. Officers found an adult male identified as 47-year-old Stephen Killam of Fairfield dead inside a vehicle, Moss said.

Witnesses reported seeing a black Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck leaving the scene, and just before 9 a.m., police located the suspect vehicle and driver, 53-year-old Richard Hatt of Clinton, in Clinton.

Moss said Hatt and Killam were known to each other.

Hatt was arrested and charged with murder, and was brought to the Kennebec County Jail, Moss said. Killam's body will be brought to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy on Wednesday.

Moss said there is no danger to the public.

State police are assisting Waterville police in the shooting investigation, Moss said.

Waterville Public Schools told NEWS CENTER Maine schools in the district were in lockout mode for about an hour Tuesday morning. MSAD 49 told NEWS CENTER Maine schools in the district were in lockout for a "short time" as a precaution.
