WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are investigating a fatal shooting on Highwood Street in Waterville, that resulted in one death.

The shooting led two area school districts—Waterville Public Schools and MSAD 49—to go into lockout Tuesday morning. The school districts have since gone back to normal operations, according to the district's superintendents.

A lockout typically means nobody can leave or enter schools, but classes continue as normal.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Tuesday morning the shooting happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Highwood Street. She said an adult male died.

Major Crimes Unit Central Detectives are interviewing witnesses and Evidence Response Technicians are processing the scene, according to the release.

Moss said there is no danger to the public and anticipates having additional information this afternoon pending next of kin notification.

State police are assisting Waterville police in the shooting investigation, Moss said.

Waterville Public Schools told NEWS CENTER Maine schools in the district were in lockout mode for about an hour Tuesday morning. MSAD 49 told NEWS CENTER Maine schools in the district were in lockout for a "short time" as a precaution.
