Waterville crash leaves one dead, one injured

Waterville police said members of the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit would be actively involved in the investigation.

WATERVILLE, Maine — One person died and another was injured in a crash Wednesday afternoon in Waterville.

Around 2:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Trafton Road and West River Road, the Waterville Police Department said in a release.

Police said it appears as though a grey Toyota Camry was turning left onto West River Road from Trafton Road when it was struck on the driver’s door by a white Mitsubishi dump truck operated by 35-year-old Joshua Nelson of Sidney.

Nelson died at the scene, according to police.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to Northern Light Inland Hospital before being transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Police described the person's injuries as "significant."

Police said they are withholding the Toyota driver's identity due to the person's age.

Because the crash involved a commercial motor vehicle, officials said members of the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit would also be actively involved in the investigation, including crash reconstruction and forensic mapping.
