Windstorm causes near collapse of scaffolding at Cross Office building in Augusta

The Cross Office Building in Augusta will be closed all day Tuesday for the removal of scaffolding damaged in the storm, a release stated.

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Janet Mills announced that State of Maine offices will be closed until noon Tuesday after a windstorm that brought heavy rains, creating widespread outages across the state.

The Cross Office Building located at 111 Seawall St. in Augusta will be closed all day Tuesday for the removal of scaffolding damaged Monday in the storm, according to a news release from the governor's office.

"I am delaying the opening of State office buildings tomorrow to allow time for power restoration, road clean up, and other clean up efforts," Mills said in the release. "I strongly urge all Maine people to stay off the roads if possible. If you must travel, please exercise caution and be sure to provide plenty of room for emergency first responders and for crews that are restoring power and clearing roadways. We will continue to closely monitor the impact of the storm overnight, and we urge folks to stay vigilant and safe."

Power outages across the state exceeded 400,000 by Monday evening, and storm restorations are expected to take several days to complete.

Maine's Emergency Operation Center is in partial activation, tracking the storm and monitoring county-based emergency requests, the release said.
