Update: 17 people displaced by Waterville fire

Although multiple pets were saved, two cats and a ferret died in the fire.

WATERVILLE, Maine — Update 10 p.m.:

Seventeen people were displaced after an apartment fire in Waterville on Friday afternoon, officials say. 

A news release from the Waterville Fire Department stated multiple pets were rescued, but two cats and a ferret didn't survive the blaze. 

The fire resulted in no human injuries or deaths, officials said. 

The building housed seven apartments, and crews arrived at the scene to find heavy fire in the back third of the building, according to the release. 

Red Cross was asked to assist the displaced individuals with temporary housing assignments. 

The Maine Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident, according to the release.

Crews were called to a structure fire in Waterville on Friday afternoon, officials say. 

A dispatcher at the Waterville Fire Department confirmed crews responded to a fire at 5 Silver Place. 

As of 4 p.m., several firefighters had left the scene.  

The dispatcher did not say whether any injuries were reported.
