AUGUSTA, Maine — The Office of the Maine Attorney General is investigating the circumstances that led Augusta police officers and a Capitol police officer to fire their weapons at a man in Augusta Sunday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. after Augusta police received a report of an armed man threatening residents in the area of 132 Northern Ave., the department said in a news release Monday morning.

After police made contact with the man, he shot at the uniformed officers, and four Augusta police officers and one Capitol police officer returned fire, the release stated.

Four Augusta police officers, Sergeant Derek Daley, Officer Matthew Gurney, Officer Andrew Frost, and Officer Jonathan Young, were involved in the shooting, according to an updated news release Monday afternoon. One Capitol police officer was also involved, according to the release. Augusta police did not specify who fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.

A male subject who was found inside the residence was identified as 22-year-old Liban S. Mohamed of Lewiston. Police did not explain the cause and manner of his death.

None of the officers were injured, police said.

NEWS CENTER Maine has reached out to the Augusta Police Department for further clarification.

The Augusta police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, according to the department, which is standard procedure during these types of investigations.

Officials said drivers in the area of 132 Northern Avenue should expect traffic delays and detours on Northern Avenue between St. Augustine Church and Calumet Park while the investigation takes place.

Police said they do not believe there is a public safety risk in connection with the incident.
